Elegant and artistic, this Ivory and Green Gulbahar saree is a hand embroidered Chanderi silk-cotton saree that brings together two beloved Indian embroidery traditions: kantha and phulkari. Fine kantha running-stitch outlines form scalloped borders and a grand mandala medallion on the pallu, while phulkari-inspired floral motifs in green, mustard yellow and maroon are scattered across the soft ivory body. The pallu is finished with playful pom-pom tassels (latkans) that sway with every step. Light, airy and festive, it is made for women who love colourful handwork with a touch of folk charm.
About the Gulbahar collection
Gulbahar means "spring of flowers". It is Silk Ethnics' collection of hand embroidered Chanderi silk-cotton sarees, with every motif hand embroidered on a light ivory Chanderi base. The richness comes from the handwork rather than heavy zari, so each saree feels special yet stays light to wear.
What are kantha and phulkari?
Kantha is a traditional hand embroidery from Bengal, made with fine running stitches that create outlines, borders and motifs. Phulkari, meaning "flower work", is a traditional floral embroidery from Punjab. On this saree, kantha stitch lines and phulkari-style floral motifs come together for a colourful, handcrafted look.
Where to wear this ivory and green saree
Wear it for Diwali, Navratri, Durga Puja, Baisakhi and Lohri, temple visits, pooja at home, mehendi and haldi functions, and family celebrations. Its cheerful colours also make it a lovely festive gift for a mother, sister or friend who loves handcrafted sarees.
How to style it
Festive and traditional: pair it with a bottle green or mustard blouse, gold-toned jhumkas, green glass bangles and a gajra.
Soft and elegant: choose an ivory blouse with layered pearls and pearl drops for a graceful pooja or day-function look.
Boho: wear a maroon or olive sleeveless blouse with oxidised silver jewellery, a macramé potli bag and kolhapuris to play up the folk charm of the tassels.
Each piece is a work of art which uniquely displays the craftsperson's skill. The beauty of handcrafted fabric is that no two pieces look exactly alike, and minute flaws are very common. The imperfections can be anything from an uneven yarn to a slight variation in the embroidery. The beauty of an original handcrafted saree lies in its imperfections.
Pls note that there may be a mild colour variation in the saree due to colour reproduction in camera and screen.
Frequently asked questions
What makes this Gulbahar saree unique? This Ivory and Green Gulbahar saree combines two hand embroidery traditions, kantha and phulkari, on a light Chanderi silk-cotton base, with a mandala medallion on the pallu and pom-pom tassels at its edge. As every motif is hand embroidered, no two Gulbahar sarees are exactly alike.
What is this saree made of? It is made of Chanderi silk-cotton, with hand embroidered kantha and phulkari work in green, mustard yellow and maroon on an ivory body. The blouse is attached, and the total length is 6.3 to 6.5m (5.5m saree and 80cm blouse).
What is the difference between kantha and phulkari embroidery? Kantha is a Bengal embroidery made with fine running stitches that outline motifs and borders. Phulkari is a Punjabi floral embroidery known for its flower motifs. This saree uses kantha stitch lines together with phulkari-style floral motifs.
Is Chanderi silk-cotton the same as pure silk? No. Chanderi silk-cotton is a blend of silk and cotton. The silk adds a soft sheen and the cotton keeps it light and breathable.
Which occasions is this saree best for? It suits Diwali, Navratri, Durga Puja, Baisakhi, Lohri, temple visits, pooja at home, mehendi and haldi functions, and family celebrations.
How can I style an ivory and green kantha saree? For a festive look, wear a bottle green or mustard blouse with gold-toned jhumkas and green bangles. For an elegant look, choose an ivory blouse with layered pearls. For a boho look, pair a maroon or olive blouse with oxidised silver jewellery and a macramé potli.
Is it a good saree to gift? Yes. Its cheerful colours, folk embroidery and tasselled pallu make it a memorable festive gift for a mother, sister or friend.
Is it comfortable for long festive days? Yes. Chanderi silk-cotton is light and breathable, so the saree stays comfortable through long pujas, functions and celebrations.
Is the blouse piece included? Yes, an 80cm blouse piece is attached to the saree.
How do I care for this hand embroidered saree? Dry clean only, including the first wash. Iron on low heat on the reverse side, avoiding direct heat on the embroidery. Keep the tassels untangled, keep perfume and deodorant away from the fabric, and store it folded in a muslin or cotton cloth so the embroidery doesn't snag.

Care Instructions
Care Instructions
- Dry clean the first time; mild hand wash in cold water after that
- Never wring — press water out and hang over a rod
- Dry in shade, never direct sun
- Iron while slightly damp; linen takes a hot iron well
- Linen creases as you wear it. That's the fabric, not a fault
- Before the first wash, soak 15 minutes in cold water with a handful of rock salt. This sets the colour
- Mild detergent only, cold water, no bleach, no machine
- Don't let soap sit on the fabric — rinse quickly
- Shade dry; light starch keeps the crispness
- Medium iron
- Dry clean only, always
- Blot stains immediately with a dry cloth. Never rub, never use water
- Store wrapped in muslin, never plastic — plastic blackens zari
- Refold along different lines every few months so creases don't set
- Iron on low, reverse side, with a cotton cloth in between
- Dry clean only
- The zari is delicate — avoid hooks, velcro and rough jewellery
- Store rolled or loosely folded in muslin
- Iron on the lowest setting with a cloth between, never directly on zari
- Natural dyes release colour in the first two or three washes. Wash separately in cold water
- Mild detergent, no soaking, no bleach
- Shade dry, reverse side out
- The colours soften and deepen over years. That's how natural dye is meant to age
- Dry clean only
- Iron on the reverse, never over the embroidery or painted areas
- Store flat in muslin so threads don't catch
